"Retro" is the fiftieth episode of Lilo & Stitch: The Series. It aired on May 20, 2005.

Plot[]

Nani's middle school friends, Ellen and Lona, return to Kauai for a visit and, thinking that Nani is vice president of the business she works for (which is clearly not true), invite her and her ʻohana on a yacht cruise. Meanwhile, Stitch encounters an experiment that reverts individuals to a primitive state. Lilo, Jumba, Pleakley, Ellen and Lona are transformed into cave people, which causes trouble on the yacht. Now, Stitch must find and capture Retro before it's too late.

Goofs[]

  • In "Woops", Retro erroneously appeared with Gantu's other captive experiments, but he was captured by Lilo and Stitch.
  • At the end of the episode, when the visitors run from the T. rex, two men run off to the right of the screen before suddenly disappearing. This is likely a layering error because it appears that the men were supposed to run through the open gates to the park, disappearing behind the wall, but end up running on the plants against the wall.
  • Retro is wearing a Kokaua Wildlife Preserve employee shirt in the episode's last scene. However, when the T. rex appears at the end, Retro is suddenly no longer wearing his shirt.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: Be yourself.
    • Side Moral: Every occupation has an importance.
  • Nani's junior high friends, Ellen and Lona, are revealed to live in New York City and Los Angeles, respectively.
  • The mammoth, saber-toothed tiger, and saber-toothed squirrel are likely references to Manny, Diego, and Scrat (respectively) from the Ice Age films. Coincidentally, Disney currently owns the Ice Age franchise following the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019.
    • In 2002, Argentinean scientists uncovered the remains of a similar extinct prehistoric squirrel-like mammal with long fangs like the one seen in this episode and in the Ice Age franchise, which was dubbed Cronopio dentiacutus in 2011.[1]
  • Lilo as a cave girl looks similar to a plump version of Fang from Dave the Barbarian.
  • This is the only episode where Nani is at fault, as opposed to Lilo and/or Stitch.
    • Technically speaking, Nani did not lie about being rich, though Ellen and Lona jumped to false conclusions before she could explain.
  • The wildlife preserve is a parody of the one from the 1993 sci-fi film Jurassic Park.
    • Evidently, some scenes in Jurassic Park were filmed in Kauai (for example, the scene with the Gallimimus stampede).
    • At the end of this episode, Lilo even mentions that the wildlife park reminds her of a movie she once saw, which is referenced by a living T. rex that Retro resurrected by unknown means and the rippling puddle before it appears, a nod to said film.
